Artemis Fowl: Pure Evil

Gee, I read this book three years ago and I can't help myself but to make a late review.

Neways, I was able to rent a copy of this book at Books and Shelves in Mainstrip Alley (in front of USLS). I was just curious about the book and my friend, Geleen, recommended it to me once before she went abroad. It's in a series, and, unfortunately, I haven't touched any sequels as of the moment.

Artemis Fowl redefines fairy tale. All these years, I've been fascinated by fairies being beautiful and magical but in Artemis Fowl, it's the other way around. How is it fairies being connected with technology? Weird combination.

Artemis Fowl the Second is the main character, though, he's somewhat an evil brat. My friend Kirc, defined 'pure evil' as being devilish as young as you've been born. Well, that's Artemis (named after a Greek goddess but he's a he). He's the spoiled son of a crime lord (a Mafiya - spelled as such) and aided with his friend, Butler, involve themselves in such crimes childish but worth an adventure.

In Artemis Fowl, the first book in the series, Artemis is curious about fairies and found out that they really exist. With his wealth and wit he embarked a journey to different countries in search for them. Luckily, he was able to spot one at last, in Vietnam, and acquired for himself a holy book of fairies which contains all he wanted to know about fairy lore.

With his wonderful book, Artemis was able to kidnap a fairy named Holly Short, who was renewing her powers on a willow tree somewhere in Ireland. Holly Short didn't complete her renewing ritual thus she was vulnerable to the little devil. She was brought to the Fowl Manor and Artemis contacted her fellow fairies for a ransom.

Now that's funny. I admire Colfer's imagination for drafting a story as such. Yes, Artemis Fowl is a young criminal but...kidnapping a fairy? Nonsense. Hey, why did I never thought of that? Haha.

So after kidnapping Holly Short, there followed a hostage drama in the Fowl Manor. Artemis was assisted by his loyal bodyguard, Butler, in their defense of the mansion against the magic of the fairies. But the fairies couldn't outwit them. Any move they made threatened the life of Holly Short.

Stockholm Syndrome. The problem was solved in the end and Holly Short and Artemis became friends. Together, they would do more crimes in the sequels. I heard there's an upcoming movie too. Woot!
